Intended as a focus to the further development of the Salish Indian culture, Seabird Island School has been closely integrated into the community on many levels. The sense of community is strengthened through the siting of the school along the north edge of the existing grassed square, better defining the common and making the school integral to the life of the village. Participation is further encouraged through the organization of the school with each class opening out to the south facing collective porch, creating a permeable and active edge along the village green. This active community edge, with its large overhangs and trellis structure, contrasts with the closed, ambiguously formed northern face which mediates the extreme winter winds from the mountain valley. The configuration of the school alludes to both the traditional animal lore imagery of the Salish people and their active involvement in their community and its development.
